Patagonia {150}

This summer Wales’ two national theatre companies - National Theatre Wales and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru - teamed up for the very first time to create a visual and storytelling feast. The story of the 150 Welsh men, women and children who settled in Patagonia in 1865, and the lives of their descendants today.

Melin Tregwynt was asked to create a fabric for the performance uniting Welsh & South American styles.

Our cloth explores new ground and it’s a bit of a nod to those bold pioneers. It’s now available to buy direct from us and you can find more information and sizes and prices

Melin Tregwynt at Mercure Bristol North, the Grange Hotel

Mercure Bristol North, The Grange Hotel has undergone a major investment, transforming the 19th century manor house. The extensive refurbishment includes the renovation of the hotel’s ground floor including the restaurant, bar, lounge and reception area as well as the redesign of the hotel’s largest event space, The Park Suite, to provide the ideal setting to cater for all occasions.

The stunning Bath stone manor house, located in a peaceful pocket of North Bristol countryside, will unveil its new look at an official opening on May 15. As part of the refurbishment the hotel will present a brand new image, which includes new lighting, carpets and drapes plus a brand new sophisticated colour scheme. Creating a stylish and contemporary feel, the hotel retains its historical features and uses current colours and fabrics to give a modern day style.

Interior designer Helen Hooper of HH Interiors, who has previously worked with Jupiter Hotels on renovation projects across the UK, comments on the project: “Throughout the public areas of the hotel, the interior fuses contemporary fabrics and colours with traditional period features and detail. There are bespoke touches throughout the design. The fabrics are luxurious and sumptuous in elegant colours with a mixture of fine textures to create a relaxed ambience.

Melin Tregwynt throws are used in all the bedrooms. Shane Harris, CEO Jupiter Hotels said: “The refurbishment in Bristol is part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the design, quality and experience at our hotels. We always strive to keep the character and bring in touches of modernity when refurbishing our hotels and we feel Mercure Bristol North, The Grange Hotel is a great example of this. We believe in great service and great design and the latest investment in Bristol will ensure guests receive both.”

celebrating St David's Day...

Musician Lucy J Morgan certainly gives a modern twist to the traditional Welsh lady costume as she poses for the camera for a St David’s Day shoot.

She teams a cape made by Melin Tregwynt bearing a St David’s Cross pattern with an updated version of the classic hat with black skinny jeans, casual shirt and heels.

And in another picture, captured by Dean Chalkley, she can be seen wearing a patterned tank top and flannel trousers by Melin Teifi and clutching her treasured viola covered in the St David’s Cross printed fabric. All her clothes were made by Brian Mallam.

The images were taken as classical musician Lucy prepares for the Wales At No 1 concert which she’s producing for the Wales Millennium Centre.

Taking place on March 1 at the Cardiff Bay venue, it will celebrate our nation’s chart-topping singles. And the man who scored Wales’ first number one hit – Ricky Valance – to perform his 1960 hit Tell Laura I Love Her.

Other singers who scored number ones will also grace the Donald Gordon stage, including Shakin’Stevens who has scored the most top spots for Wales thanks to tracks like This Ole House and Green Door.

Manic Street Preachers’ frontman James Dean Bradfield who’s enjoyed a number of chart-toppers with the band, including If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, will also be there alongside Wales’ latest hit-maker, Amy Wadge, who co-wrote Ed Sheeran’s best-seller Thinking Out Loud.

Lucy met the photographer several years ago while working with the band Dexys so called him with her plans for the latest shoot.

“I’ve had this idea for a long time to do a photo shoot which incorporates everything I do and so I thought it would be nice to do something around the St David’s Day concert,” said freelance musician Lucy, who’s originally from Abercrave in the Swansea Valley and has worked with the likes of Lionel Richie, Dame Shirley Bassey and Jools Holland.

“I wanted to incorporate the old with the new. The shoot took all day and going into it I found it quite overwhelming. I’d only ever been in this scenario with a band or other people but this time the pressure was all on my shoulders. But Dean is such an amazing, creative genius and put me at ease.”

Lucy, founder of the Welsh Pops Orchestra, which will be performing at the concert, is thrilled to be putting some of Wales’ chart-toppers on stage alongside some of today’s best singers who will also be interpreting other number one hits, including Gabrielle Murphy who will sing Duffy’s Mercy.

“It will be great to hear new arrangements of some famous songs and to hear people sing songs they wouldn’t normally sing.”

Texprint London 2014

Texprint London: 24 selected designers with judges

Earlier this summer I had a memorable day in London as one of the five judges of Texprint 2014.

It was our task to choose a shortlist for 5 category prizes from 24 newly graduated designers already selected from over 200 weavers, knitters, printers and embroiderers – brought together for three days in London to show their work to the textile design industry.

The London preview presentation (July 9–10) is an important part of the process that climaxes in Paris in September at Premiere Vision, where the category winners are announced and all 24 designers show – and sell – their work to industry visitors at Indigo, the creative textile and surface design show-within-a show at Premiere Vision.

On the afternoon of July 8th, we arrived at Chelsea for four hours of intensive viewing and discussion. The other judges were Sarah Campbell of legendary textile design partnership Collier Campbell; Sue Roberts, Design Director Home at leading UK department store group House of Fraser; Henry Graham, Chief Creative Officer of innovative London retailer Wolf & Badger; and Jill Chatwood, Design Director at fast-growing Vancouver-based Lululemon Athletica.

The designers were called into the room for thorough questioning and scrutiny. Names were tossed back and forth across the table. We went back to the stands to review, and review again, the work. Slowly but steadily, a shortlist emerged. Names were read out and read out again. A tweak here, a plea there, a reshuffle – and another reshuffle. The debate always driven by an urgent, passionate desire from all involved that the right names should make the shortlist.

But the real pleasure of Texprint London is that everyone is a winner – because everyone is on the Eurostar to Paris in September.

Myself and Sue Roberts reviewing portfolio work

Karen Peacock, Head of Design at Marks & Spencer said “I consider Texprint to offer the cream of the crop in textiles and print. Not only is the standard very high but the students are also very good about talking about their work.”

Texprint sponsors, such as John Snowdon, Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, agreed: “Our aim is to find the best. We always find them at Texprint.” Roll on Paris!
