There has been weaving recorded at this whitewashed mill since the 1841 census, but Melin Tregwynt was founded by Henry Griffiths, who bought the mill in 1912.

Since then the old-fashioned hand looms and then flying shuttle looms have all been replaced by more modern rapier looms, but our signature double cloth, cartheni, welsh blankets and upholstery are still flying off the machines.

The water wheel has been restored and, though it can no longer drive the looms we hope it will generate power again soon…..watch this space!

In 2022 to protect its unique legacy, to keep jobs and to safeguard its heritage, the company became an Employee Owned Trust ensuring that all the staff have a stake in the business.

The Griffiths family has been weaving here for over one hundred years. Henry Griffiths bought Melin Tregwynt in 1912 for £760 and then moved there with his young wife Esther.

Their two sons were Benjamin and Howard who left school at 14 to work with his father in the mill. Eluned, his wife, was only 18 when she married Howard and came to live at Tregwynt.

Howard’s son Eifion and his wife Amanda ran the Mill from 1986 up until 2022 when, they set up an Employee Owned Trust. They recognised that the skills and knowledge of all the staff is what keeps the tradition of Welsh weaving alive at Melin Tregwynt, The Trust keeps control of the company safely in the hands of the people who have been a major part of building its success

There has been a shop at mill since the 1950's – it was originally in the parlour of the house!  The current shop was built in 1956 and Eluned Griffiths was behind the counter and welcoming customers here for over 40 years.

Today visitors will find a warm welcome 7 days a week, a great selection of blankets, throws and cushions alongside gifts clothing and accessories.  There’s always good coffee and an excellent selection of local food in our mill café
